DOJ investigating after Columbia County deputies shoot at person with weapon

TOWN OF SCOTT, Wis. — The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating an officer-involved incident in Columbia County from Sunday afternoon.

According to a news release, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office responded to a field near Highway 33 in the Town of Scott for a reported suicidal subject who was armed with a weapon.

The release said deputies negotiated with the person until they pointed their weapon at law enforcement.

Officials said three deputies discharged their weapons, striking the subject.

EMS was on standby and law enforcement immediately provided medical care to the person, the release said.

The person was taken to a local hospital; their current condition is not known.

No other individuals were hurt during the incident, DOJ said.

DCI is leading the investigation and is assisted by the Wisconsin State Crime Lab and Wisconsin State Patrol.

The investigation is ongoing.
