DOJ identifies officer involved in Beaver Dam fatal shooting

The officer involved in a shooting in Beaver Dam earlier this month has been identified, according to a release.

Joseph Nicholas, a nine-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, shot and killed 53-year-old James A. Quealy, of Beaver Dam, Aug. 5, officials said.

Nicholas has not been involved in a previous officer-involved shooting, officials said.

Officers responded to a call of a suicidal man with a weapon on the city’s north side. The man told police he wished for a “suicide by cop,” officials said.

About two hours into the incident, Quealy fired his weapon at a deputy, who returned fire, killing the man.

The Department of Criminal Investigation is still investigating the incident.
