DOJ appeals Schimel video release order
Judge had ordered release Thursday
MADISON, Wis. — The state Department of Justice has appealed an order to release videos of training seminars Republican attorney general Brad Schimel gave for prosecutors to Democrats.
Democrats believe Schimel made inappropriate remarks at five DOJ-run training seminars since 2009. Schimel has denied the allegations but Democrats have filed a lawsuit demanding DOJ release videos of the seminars.
DOJ officials say they can’t find three of the videos and won’t release the other two for fear they would reveal prosecutors’ strategies and compromise victim privacy.
Dane County Circuit Judge Richard Niess on Thursday ordered DOJ to release the two videos by midday Friday but said an appeal would trigger an automatic stay until Monday.
DOJ filed notice of appeal with the 2nd District Court of Appeals just before 11 a.m. Friday.
