Derald Roy Smedegard

MADISON- Derald Roy Smedegard, age 74, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017, at St. Mary’s Health Care Center.

He was born on Feb. 12, 1943, in Madison, to Derald and Elvina Smedegard. Derald married the love of his life, Sharen M. Keller, on Oct. 6, 1962, in Madison. He graduated from Central High School in 1961 and attended Madison Business College, where he studied to become a CPA.

Derald was a professional painter, beginning his career in 1962 through Painters Local 802, where he was the recording secretary in later years. He took his apprenticeship with Bob Seibel and was named Apprentice of the Year in 1966. He also worked for Eric Nelson and Stolen McKay, ending his career with the University of Wisconsin from 1979 to 2002.

Derald was a tax practitioner, an avid and competitive card player, and had a passion for making beautiful furniture. He was very talented with his hands and was a true “jack of all trades”. He was a member of the Wisconsin Campers Association for 53 years, with whom he held many offices, both in the chapter and state levels.

Derald was an avid fan of the Wisconsin Badgers, and the Green Bay Packers. He fulfilled his life long dream by buying land in Mercer and creating a “home away from home”.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sharen of 55 years; his son, Derald W.; and two daughters, Sharee (Jim) Sensenbrenner, and Shannon (Rick) Skarzynski; three grandchildren, Michael and Lin Sensenbrenner, and Jake Schuepbach; and one step-grandson, Sloan Skarzynski. Derald is further survived by his four sisters, Kathy (Al) Bartz, Dorothy (Marv) Henry, Nancy (Harry) Beloungy, and Sandy (Pete) Luther; his aunt, Dorothy Kilgore; two sisters-in-law, Bonnie (John) Ruck, and Linda (Bob) Beaudette; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Derald also leaves behind two special Godchildren, Scott Dykstra and Debbie Shaw; and three very good friends, Arnie Billig, Chuck Peck, and Larry Jensen. Derald was preceded in death by his parents; and his mother and father-in-law.

A graveside service will be held in the chapel at Roselawn Memorial Park, 401 Femrite Drive, Monona, at 2p.m., on Monday, Dec. 11, 2017 with brother-in-law Rev. John N. Ruck. Derald’s sister
