Deforest police hand out turkeys instead of tickets during routine traffic stops
DEFOREST, Wis. — The Deforest Police Department was handing out turkeys instead of tickets Tuesday.
The idea came from a man who reached out to the police department to donate turkeys to people in the community who could use them, according to Deforest Police Department Chief Daniel Furseph.
Officers have been handing out the turkeys during routine traffic stops that typically would not have resulted in a ticket anyway, the chief said.
The police department started out with 10 turkeys, but plans to buy more and hand them out until they don’t have any turkeys left.
Chief Furseph said they are handing out the turkeys Tuesday so that people have a couple of days to thaw the frozen birds before Thanksgiving.
