Deadly crash in Sun Prairie blamed on drunk driver
SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. — A drunken driver is being blamed for a deadly crash Sunday in Sun Prairie.
Dane County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Ira Simpson said Nicholas Hanley, of Sun Prairie, was arrested Sunday on tentative charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle and fourth-offense operating while intoxicated. He was also cited for failure to maintain control and unsafe passing.
Around 4 p.m. Sunday, crews responded to a two-car crash in the 2600 block of County Highway T near Betlach Road.
Hanley was driving his vehicle eastbound on County Highway T when he attempted to pass another driver as it was turning into a driveway.
Hanley’s truck hit a car on the driver’s side, which resulted in significant injuries to the driver and passenger of the car, officials said. The three people involved in the crash were wearing seat belts.
The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency officials, while another passenger was transported to the University of Wisconsin Hospital by MedFlight.
The name of the driver killed in the crash is being withheld by officials until the family is notified.
County Highway T was closed for nearly four hours as the Dane County Crash Reconstruction Team and Lab processed the scene.
