DCSO: Man crashes into squad car after pursuit, deputy hurt
Endeavor man arrested on multiple charges
TOWN OF BURKE, Wis. — Dane County deputies arrested an Endeavor man Saturday night after he crashed into a deputy’s squad car following a brief pursuit, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
Deputies said they observed a car weaving between lanes on Highway 19 near Davidson Drive in Sun Prairie. The white 2000 Ford Ranger matched the description of a suspect vehicle that fled from a Madison police officer about 20 minutes earlier, deputies said.
According to the release, a deputy attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle, but its driver, 22-year-old Anthony Smith of Endeavor, continued driving toward the Interstate 39/90 onramp in the Town of Burke, failing to obey traffic signals and striking a sign.
Once Smith struck the sign, deputies said he turned his truck toward the deputy and struck his cruiser. Deputies said the suspect then took off toward I-39/90.
With the help of DeForest police and Wisconsin state troopers, police were able to stop Smith on I-39/90 near County Road V, south of DeForest, after deploying stop sticks, the release said.
Troopers arrested Smith after a brief foot chase near the 6900 block of Hickory Lane in the Town of Vienna, deputies said. The pursuit lasted a total of 12 minutes.
Smith faces charges of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, fleeing an officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, with further charges pending, deputies said.
The deputy, a 24-year veteran, suffered minor injuries in the crash, according to the release.
