David (Huntz) Statz, age 73, of Waunakee passed away on Friday, January 12th 2018, after a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
He was born on October 23, 1944 to Carl F. and Helen Statz.
Dave graduated from Waunakee High School in 1962 where he also met the love of his life, Dorothy Laufenberg. Dave and Dorothy were prom King and Queen in 1961 and were later happily married for 52 years.
Dave was a prominent business man and one of the owners of Carl F. Statz and Sons. A farm implement business which was started by his father in 1930 and carried on by himself and two brothers, and now his nephews and sons, Brad and Bob. Dave was an avid sports fan. He loved to tell the story of his high school football team which went undefeated and held the opponents scoreless and negative yardage throughout the entire season. He loved listening to Bob Uecker on the radio and watching Brewer games on the TV in the garage at the Lake House. Dave and Dorothy were season ticket holders to Wisconsin Badger Football for over 30 years and went to countless Bowl game and Dave was a member of the Mendota Gridiron Club (a Badger Football Booster Club).
His favorite times were spent at the cottage on Lake Wisconsin with Dorothy, the kids, grandkids and the many friends that would happen to stop by.
Dave was a very generous person and gave back to his community in numerous ways. He was an active member of St. John’s Catholic Church and was most proud of the 33 years he spent on the Waunakee Fire Department.
Dave is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Dorothy; 4 children; Brian (Kelly) Statz, Brad Statz, Bob Statz and Brenda McClure. 8 Grandchildren; Tyler, Justin, Shelby, MacKenzie, Casey, Brady, Jadyn and Olivia. His siblings; Eileen (Dean) Hahn, Ken (Mary) Statz. Brother and Sister in Laws; Toni Statz, Loretta (Joe Kalscheur, Marion (Delmer) Hellenbrand, Henry (Shirly) Laufenberg, Margaret (Ken) Bernards, Alice (Dick) Weiss, Ron (Jean) Laufenberg.
He is preceded in death by his parents Carl and Helen, step-mother Anne Statz, brother Ronald Statz, and in-laws Ted and Margaret Laufenberg.
The family would like to extend our gratitude to ALS Wisconsin for their help over the past year along with the nurses and staff at Agrace Hospice Care for their compassion during Dave’s final weeks.
Funeral services will be held on Thurs., Jan. 18, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church, 209 South St., Waunakee. Msgr. James Gunn will officiate. Friends may call on Wed., Jan. 17, 2018 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the church. Friends may also call at the church on Thurs. from 9:30 until the time of service. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.
We would also like to thank our friends and family for their overwhelming support during this difficult time.
The children would also like to acknowledge the strength Dad and Mom have shown throughout Dad’s illness. Dad never complained or let ALS get in the way of his normal life. Mom was the best caregiver Dad could have had during the last year of his life and the 52 years of marriage they shared.
