David Charles Stansfield
David Charles Stansfield, Sr., age 80 of rural Hollandale died on Friday night, September 21, 2012 at the Upland Hills Hospital in Dodgeville.
He was born on January 4, 1932 in Chicago to Albert and Ruth (Anderson) Stansfield. He attended a one-room schoolhouse for grade school in Morton Grove, Illinois, graduated from the Niles High School in Skokie, Illinois, and attended the Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He was married in 1953 in Algonquin, Illinois to Jeanne Lachel. David worked in the insurance field for most of his career. He started working at Washington National Insurance right out of college, then worked with Kemper Insurance, worked with Jack Glasson, a CPA, worked at Peterson Products where they made Weber barbecue kettles, Filtech electronics company, and then in 1969 the family left the Chicago area and moved to Wisconsin where they lived in Daleyville for a time and he began his career in at Cuna Mutual Insurance in Madison where he worked until 1991, for 22 years. In January of 1973 they bought the farm where he still lives and raised beef and many other animals. He was very active with soil conservation, and sustainable farming.
David worked in insurance, but loved farming. He also enjoyed golfing, model railroads and genealogy. He was a great reader, often reading to his children, especially the Wizard of Oz series. He was very concerned about and involved with rural, medical, social and farming issues. He was a member of the Hollandale Lutheran Church, also in earlier years was active in the Lutheran Athletic Association in Chicago and Lutherdale Bible Camp in Elkhorn. He was also very active in the Rural Life Center at Sinsinawa outside of Hazel Green. David’s most important work and joy was with his own children, grandchildren and dearly loved the great-grandchildren.
David is survived by his wife, Jeanne Stansfield of Hollandale; six children, David (Cindy) Stansfield of Horicon, Jeannie (Greg) U’Ren of Mount Horeb, Lynette Stansfield of Hollandale, Jonathan (Barbara) Stansfield of Ripon, Leah Stansfield of Hollandale, and Stephen Stansfield of Blanchardville; nine grandchildren, Dianna (Zac) Metz, David (Turie) Stansfield III, James (Maggie) Stansfield, Amy and Holly (Kevin Hage) U’Ren, Laura and Sarah Stansfield, and Christian and Evan Stansfield; and five great-grandchildren, Zachary Jr., Jacob, and Alexander Metz and Stephanie and David Charles IV Stansfield. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Judy; a brother, Ted; his son, Philip Stansfield who died March 17, 1992; a daughter Lynn in infancy; a grandson, Greg U’Ren; and a great-grandson Joshua Stansfield.
A Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 25, 2012 from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Hollandale Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the Hollandale Lutheran Church. Rev. Mark Gruner of the Pecatonica Lutheran Parish will officiate. Burial will be in the Long Valley Cemetery in rural Hollandale. The Saether Funeral Home in Blanchardville is assisting the family.
