DATCP releases ‘Gift Card Do’s, Don’ts and Gotchas’
MADISON, Wis. — Shoppers and gift recipients alike love gift cards for their convenience and ease of purchase and use, but as with any exchange of money, there are do’s, don’ts and potentials scams involved, according to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.
The DATCP asks shoppers to take steps to ensure that card recipients get the full value of the gift and to watch for phony promises to cut-rate or free gift cards.
Officials say gift cards have been used as the bait in a number of social media, text message and email scams.
