Darlene was born the first of ten children, to Elmer and Jeanette (Kabele) Chapman on May 6, 1929. She graduated from Dodgeville High School in 1947. During high school she worked at the Royal Blue Grainery and Wayside Market. She was united in marriage to her sweetheart Robert “Bob” Schambow, on February 14, 1950, during a blizzard. They farmed together all their married life. Darlene also worked off the farm at Fendall Lenscraft, retiring in 1994 after 25 years of service. She and Bob enjoyed square dancing and playing in a Sunday night traveling card club. She was a 4-H club sewing leader for 25 years for the Woodchuck 4-H Club. Her hobbies included sewing, knitting, crocheting, and embroidery. She was a member of Lutheran Church of Peace and a member of the Hannah Circle Sewing Group, where she made a lot of quilt tops and helped put them together for families in need. She attended all of her children’s school music and sport activities. But what brought her the greatest joy was watching her grandchildren participate in their school activities.
