Darlene Ann “Dar” (Hrabovsky) Brown

MONONA- Darlene Ann “Dar” (Hrabovsky) Brown, age 88, passed away on Monday, Oct. 23, 2017, at Heritage Monona.

She was born on Dec. 16, 1928, the daughter of Frank and Alice Hrabovsky. She married James K. Brown on March 8, 1952, in Madison.

Dar was born in Spring Green, Wis., and grew up in Black Hawk, Wis. She went to school in a one room school house for grades kindergarten through 8th. The early years had the students using an outhouse and needing to keep a fire going in the potbellied stove for heat. Winters were spent sledding on the hill behind the school. Dar attended secretarial school in Madison after graduating from high school and soon after became employed at Prudential Insurance. Her career was spent working at Prudential Insurance in Madison. Reading was her passion and she spent hours immersed in mysteries and novels. She was known at the Monona Library for her frequent visits. Her other hobby was knitting afghans that she donated to friends and to the Monona Fire Department, for them to give to families in need.

Dar was an avid gourmet cook and her kitchen was always filled with smells of her tasty desserts and meals made from scratch.

Jim and Dar spent many fun-filled evenings dancing with friends at the Madison Eastside Club, where they were lifetime members. A Manhattan with two cherries was always her favorite evening beverage of choice. Besides the love of her life, Jim, her second love was her white and black spotted cat, Fuzz, who was her faithful companion for 15 years.

Darlene was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; and twin brother, Douglas Hrabovsky.

Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, at noon, on Friday, Oct. 27, 2017. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Monona Library, Madison Humane Society, or a charity of your choice.

Special thanks to Elli (Jerry) Klinzing, Joseph and Marita Klinzing, Wendy and Jeff Hinz, Heritage Monona Memory Care staff and Heartland Hospice, for the love and care they provided Dar for the past number of years.
