Daniel Goodrich Colby
Daniel Colby, age 86 of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin died Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at the St. Clare Hospice House in Baraboo, Wisconsin after a long and courageous battle against COPD.
The Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Wisconsin Dells with Father Eric Sternberg celebrating. Visitation will be held at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m.
Daniel was born October 20, 1928 in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin the son of Daniel and Elizabeth (VanLoo) Colby. He graduated from Wisconsin Dells High School in 1946, worked as a captain on one of the Wisconsin River boats during the summer months and operated a gas station/auto repair shop. He was also the projectionist at the downtown Dells movie theater. At the outbreak of the Korean War he enlisted in the US Army and was stationed at Camp McCoy. Dan lived most of his life in Wisconsin Dells except for 17 years working at an electroplating firm in Indianapolis, Indiana. Upon retirement in 1982 he moved back to the Dells residing in the Colby family home on Bowman Road. He enjoyed many hours visiting with his “coffee club” friends.
Dan was a Legion Commander at the VFW; was very active at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, serving as an usher and member of the Holy Name Society. At various times he also served on several boards of appeal for the city.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert Colby; brother in law, Robert Casey and sister in law, Mary Colby. He is survived by a sister, Marceil Casey; eleven nieces and nephews, many great nieces and great nephews, several great great nieces and nephews; and special friends, Bob and Miriam Lueck of Wisconsin Dells. All have wonderful memories of this fun man who played a big role in their lives.
