Dane County uses snow plow simulator to prepare drivers for winter
MADISON, Wis. — Dane County and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation are training snow plow drivers using the L3T simulator for the first time.
Snow plows are big and there are a lot of components that drivers have to control when on the road, all while watching for hazards.
“You have to be on your toes when you’re out plowing,” Eric Harried, a Dane County highway worker, said.
The L3T simulator puts drivers behind the wheel of a replica snow plow machine and computerized videos that throw hazards in the way, giving them a realistic experience without getting into the big truck.
Harried has been driving a snow plow for about 30 years and said the simulator was accurate with what he sees on the road.
Dane County Executive Joe Parisi got behind the wheel of the simulator.
“This is not easy. This is really hard,” Parisi said. “Getting used to it and knowing the different types of hazards that you’ll encounter while you’re actually out on the real road doing that is incredibly important.”

Dane County is also reminding people to be cautious of snow plows.
“Give us the room to do the work,” Harried said. “The faster we can get the snow off the road, the faster people can get to their destination.”
