Dane County to distribute free compost material
DANE COUNTY, Wis. — Dane County officials are celebrating their efforts to reduce landfill waste, helping local farmers in the process. Next week, the county will be giving away free compost material to residents looking to refresh their soil.
“The farmers and growers really like it,” said John Welch, Dane County Solid Waste manager. “It’s rich in nutrients, it’s a great soil amendment adding moisture retention and health to their soil.”
The compost material is made from grass clippings, leaves and yard waste from the community. Instead of being added to a landfill that releases greenhouse gas emissions, the waste is being transformed into new plants and food.
Local farmers and gardeners can come pick up one load of compost each day next week from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Compost is being distributed from both Westport and Verona compost sites.
— Verona: Adjacent to the east side of the old county landfill. Same entrance as Badger Prairie Health Care Center, and then follow the gravel road to the right.
— Westport: 5254 Highway 19 one-half mile east of the Hwy. 19 & 113 intersection, across from the former Sparby’s Christmas Barn.
