Dane County Sheriff’s Office looks for witnesses, provides new information in Blue Mounds homicide case

BLUE MOUNDS, Wis. — Detectives with the Dane County Sheriff’s Office are following up on tips related to the homicide of a 26-year-old man from Blue Mounds.

The body of Nicholas Day was found off County Road JG near the border of the town of Vermont, near the Tyrol Basin Ski area on Jan. 15.

Detectives were looking for people in that area between noon and 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 15.

On Wednesday, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office identified vehicle descriptions.

According to a news release, they would like to talk to the occupants of:

  • a small silver 2-door vehicle that was southbound on County Road JG near Stewart County Park around 1:10 pm
  • a red vehicle in the area between 12:50 and 1:00 pm, traveling north on County Road JG near Stewart County Park
  • a full-size dark colored pick-up truck in the area of County Road JG near Bergum Road in the general time frame of 12:30 to 1:30 pm

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office is also looking to identify two other men who witnesses say were running/jogging in the area that day. Law enforcement described one man as having a full beard, wearing a brown jacket with red striping, running in the area of County Road JG near Bergum Road.

The second man is described as a white male wearing a white or off-white jogging suit running west to east on area trails.

These individuals are not considered suspects, but investigators believe they may have information that could be useful in solving this crime.

Day is a military veteran and the father of a young daughter.
