Dane County creates collaboration to tackle climate change
MADISON, Wis. — Local officials in Dane County created the Sustainability Leaders Collaborative to advance clean, green energy programs and tackle climate change in the county.
Officials created four groups Thursday, each with its own environmental focus.
The groups focus on supporting solar development, renewable fuel usage for municipal fleets, energy efficiency and sustainability for facilities and green infrastructure to manage runoff from heavy rain events.
Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway and County Executive Joe Parisi spoke Thursday on the sustainability initiative. Other officials involved in the collaboration stood next to them to show their support.
“This initiative is an effort for us to join forces to combine our resources and our knowledge,” Rhodes-Conway said. “And to accelerate community actions to mitigate the impacts of climate change and to reduce climate change emissions that are impacting all of our communities.”
Rhodes-Conway called the collaboration a practical conversation between officials.
After the officials split into their respective groups, they will reconvene this winter to further sustainability plans and discuss the progress each group has made.
Both Rhodes-Conway and Parisi said a more sustainable Dane County derives from community support and a community that works together for a healthier environment.
“Above all, it’s not just the energy and commitment of those of us who are standing here,” Parisi said. “But it’s the commitment of this community to being sustainable, to addressing climate change, to maintain the quality of life we so enjoy here while we grow as a community.”
A variety of climate concerns are being taken into consideration by the officials.
