Dane County authorities warn about telephone scammers
MADISON, Wis. — The Dane County Sheriff’s Office says telephone scammers have continued to find success in preying on residents.
Officials say scammers have called people while claiming to be someone from a local law enforcement agency, and that they need a payment to be made over the telephone.
“While some people simply hang up, others have given the scammers hundreds, even thousands of dollars,” a release from the Sheriff’s Office on Friday said.
Police say that this type of crime is difficult to investigate, as many of the telephone numbers scammers use are untraceable.
Police say law enforcement or any other government agency will ever call to collect money over the telephone, and that residents should never give personal information or money over the phone in general.
If you believe you have been a victim of this scam, police say you can report the incident by calling the Dane County Communications Center nonemergency line.
