CrossFit Games qualifying rounds give Madison taste of championships
MADISON, Wis. — Nearly 1,000 people poured into the makeshift gym at the Monona Terrace just for the qualifying rounds of the CrossFit Games, and it’s only a taste of what’s to come in August.
Katrin Daviosdottir and Sara Sigmundsdottir, both of Iceland, went toe-to-toe. All the excitement was just for a qualifying round, one of five taking place. The winners move on to regionals.
Daviosdottir prevailed, but the real winner is Madison, where the championship CrossFit Games will be held in August.
Jamie Patrick of the Madison Area Sports Commission said it will have a $7.2 million direct impact.
“That is just for the Games week, so it’s really much bigger than that,” Patrick said.
The CrossFit Games will remain in Madison through 2019. Locals in the industry said they are already seeing an increased interest five months before the event.
“I think a lot more people are getting interested in CrossFit just because it is coming to Madison, and for the next three years, every gym here is going to benefit,” said Edwin Bonayon, a CrossFit coach at Vultus gym in Sun Prairie.
The event is Aug. 3-6. Tickets go on sale in April. For more information, visit games.crossfit.com .
