Crews destroy home struck twice by arson

A home slated to house a sex offender that was burned twice by arson was destroyed Friday morning.

Two separate fires, in December and February, damaged the home at 4721 Gaston Circle in the town of Cottage Grove after authorities announced that a sex offender was to move into the home.

Russell A. Speigle, 50, is charged with arson in connection with the Feb. 22 fire.

In the first fire, the home sustained $90,000 in damage. After the second fire, the house was considered a total loss.

The house was to be the future home of convicted sex offender Howard Nyberg, 40. Nyberg is being held at a supervised living facility in Mauston. He pleaded guilty to second-degree sexual assault of a child in 1994.

Speigle is scheduled to appear in court for a status conference on April 6.
