Crews clean up after truck leaked chlorine on city’s West Side

Incident occurred near Whitney Way, Odana Road intersection

Madison fire crews were able to contain a liquid chlorine spill on the city’s West Side on Monday morning after a truck apparently sprang a leak.

Drivers were urged to steer clear of the area near the intersection of Whitney Way and Odana Road, where the incident began.

According to Madison fire officials, a truck carrying pool supplies was traveling eastbound on Odana Road near Tokay Boulevard just before 10:30 a.m. A cap that sealed the chlorine tank popped off and about 30 gallons of chlorine spilled in the truck bed and the street, according to a news release.

Odana Road was blocked for about 30 to 40 minutes while fire crews and the department’s Hazardous Incident Team responded. A new cap and housing was brought to the scene by the pool supply company and the chlorine tank was secured.

No injuries were reported, officials said.

Officials said they were concerned that the chlorine could mix with acid that was also on the truck, but the acid container remained sealed and no mixing occurred.
