Creamery Cafe Offers a Sweet Escape
Theresa Abel gets a kick out of people stumbling upon the Artisan Gallery and Creamery Cafe in Paoli. Since the unincorporated community’s businesses sit on one short street, visitors tend to be surprised by what they find at the sophisticated gallery and restaurant.
With a stable of renowned artists from across the country, Abel feels confident as an art director turned gallery owner. But she and husband Tim O’Neill have put trust in others when it comes to the food.
“With the café, there was a big learning curve,” says Abel. “Luckily, we met some people who own restaurants and were really generous about their advice.”
And luckily, executive chef Phil Rodriguez is something of an artist himself. Rooted in French cuisine, he has built a fan base with his mother sauces and locally sourced menu items.
The spinach kalamata pesto sandwich should be on your short list—it’s made up of spinach, basil, kalamata olives, walnuts, roasted garlic, sun-dried tomatoes and Fontina cheese on sourdough bread. Pair it with spicy tomato and carrot soup with buttermilk bleu cheese.
Or go with Abel’s favorite—a fresh mimosa, an omelet and French press coffee. With a view of the Sugar River on a June morning, nothing could be sweeter. Just make sure you make a reservation for your lunch or weekend brunch.
“People will come in the summer and they’ll say, ‘I can never get a table here,'” says Abel. “I’ll say very nicely, ‘You know, the food is so great and the view’s still great—come in February.”
