Council votes not to extend Occupy Madison permit

Judge orders Occupy Madison site cleared

Protesters at the Occupy Madison site must leave by April 30, after the Madison Common Council voted down a proposal to extend the permit.

The unanimous decision came just before midnight.

When protesters built a tent city in the 700 block of East Washington Avenue last year, they agreed to be out by April 30.

Since then, the Occupy Madison camp has largely turned into a refuge for Madison’s homeless.

Some city alders had hoped for a two-month extension to give them time to address the city’s homelessness problem. A joint city-county committee will be formed to come up with short- and long-term solutions.
