Cordelia Serena Burkeland

Cordelia Serena Burkeland

MCFARLAND/MARSHALL-Cordelia Serena Burkeland, age 99, passed away on Sunday, June 3, 2012. She was born on Sept. 15, 1912, the daughter of Erik and Ingeborg (Olsen) Strander, who both immigrated from Norway.

Cordelia’s mother passed away when she was only five. Her father was a farmer and a carpenter. Cordelia grew up on a hill in the Town of Burke, in a house her father built. She had fond memories of walking to Sunnyside School with her brothers, Art and Ernie.

Cordelia married Marvin Burkeland and they had three children, Melford, Marilyn, and Karen. While raising her children, she did domestic work for some of Madison’s, Maple Bluff’s, Shorewood’s, and Sun Prairie’s finest families, who also remained her life-long friends.

Cordelia is survived by her daughter, Marilyn (Norman) Budzisz of McFarland; daughter-in-law, Grace Burkeland of DeForest; grandchildren, Richard (Theresa) Burkeland, Melford (Wendy) Burkeland, Steven (Judi), Bart (Connie) Daggett, Jane (Joe) Stinson, and John (Tina) and Jeff Budzisz; great-grandchildren, Jeremy (Shea) and Brittany Burkeland, Trisha Heller, Sarah (Ryan) Gill, Michael Topper, Christina, Kayla, and Alyson Daggett, Samantha Cordelia, Cooper Daggett, and David, Jessica, and Jennifer Dubuc; great-great-grandchildren, Justin, Jessie, and Kyle Burkeland, Jayda Heller, Alexis Gill, Alexis Stinson, and Brian Dubuc; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She will be reunited in Heaven with her parents; daughter, Karen Sherman; son, Melford; grandson, Randy Anderson; two baby grandsons, Mark Daggett and Marvin Burkeland; brothers, Art and Ernie; special sisters-in-law, Myrtle and Betty Strander, Violet Morehouse, and Lillian Haukeried; and special buddy, Tootsie.

Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 9, 2012. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the time of service on Saturday.

She was devoted to her family, a loving mother and grandmother, and a friend to everyone. You could not know her without embracing her as a friend. She was an inspiration to everyone, with her young attitude and abilities, and her willingness to help others. She was gentle, loving and kind, and will be greatly missed.

A special thank you to Mariannes Elder House, Agrace HospiceCare, and her special friend, Lay Pastor Jon Landen.
