Complaint: Suspect in Town of Dane beating death told deputy, ‘Once I start, I can’t stop’
MADISON, Wis. — The three suspects in a homicide last week in the Town of Dane were formally charged in Dane County Court Monday.
Prosecutors alleged last week during a bail hearing that Dalton Ziegler was beaten to death because his girlfriend, 20-year-old McKayla Tracy, believed he was cheating on her. Tracy asked Jacob Johnson, 24, and Drew Luber, 21, to come to the home she shared with Ziegler Oct. 29.
According to a criminal complaint, Ziegler’s face was battered, bloodied and starting to swell when deputies arrived on scene early morning on Oct. 30.
Deputies made contact with Johnson Tuesday, when he originally told them he was a “neutral party” before admitting to beating up Ziegler, according to the complaint. Johnson told the deputy he felt bad that he might have hurt Zielger too much, but then said, “Once I start, I can’t stop.”
Luber told deputies he didn’t want to go to the home in the 7900 block of Highway 113, but Johnson told him they were just going to pick up Tracy and leave, according to the complaint. Luber said when they got there, Ziegler and Johnson got into a fight and Johnson asked Luber to help him so he held Ziegler while Johnson beat him up.
Tracy told deputies the beating lasted about 20 minutes before her, Luber and Johnson left, according to the complaint.
Johnson, Luber and Tracy were all charged Monday with party to the crime of felony murder. Luber was also arrested on a misdemeanor bail jumping charge.
Luber and Tracy are scheduled to be back in court Nov. 13. Johnson is scheduled to be back in court Nov. 15.
