Committee to start reviewing 911 center protocols
County, city leaders disagree over call center's response times
MADISON, Wis. — Dane County Executive Joe Parisi is calling for due diligence as the 911 Oversight Committee begins its work to establish operating practices for the county’s 911 center.
In recent weeks, city and county leaders have gone back and forth over 911 response times. County officials said the call center is working through minor kinks in its new system, and citizens should have full confidence in the event of an emergency. City officials said response times have been too slow.
“At the end of the day, we’re starting from a very solid foundation,” Parisi said. “We have a quality 911 center. People shouldn’t hesitate to use it.”
“In 34 years of law enforcement, I’m confident with our 911 center, confident with our director, confident with the men and women who do the job every single day,” Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney said.
Last month, Madison Mayor Paul Soglin held a press conference saying the 911 center’s response times fell short of national standards.
The oversight committee begins its work on Wednesday. The county receives about 400,000 calls a year and dispatches 85 different agencies.
