Committee recommends confirmation for new prisons secretary
A legislative committee has decided to recommend that the state Senate confirm Gov. Scott Walker’s pick to serve as Wisconsin’s next prisons secretary.
Walker appointed Jon Litscher as secretary of the Department of Corrections in February after Ed Wall resigned amid a federal investigation into abuse allegations at the state’s youth prison in Irma.
The state Senate’s judiciary committee voted 5-0 on Wednesday to recommend the Senate confirm Litscher’s appointment. Sen. Frank Lasee was absent but later phoned in a “yes” vote.
The vote clears the way for a full Senate confirmation vote.
Litscher served as DOC secretary from 1999 to 2003 under Republican Govs. Tommy Thompson and Scott McCallum.
