City starts East Washington redevelopment project

Breaks ground to construct 12-story, multipurpose building

City officials broke ground on a project in the 700 block of East Washington Avenue on Thursday.

Builders are calling the new construction project the Gebhardt Development. It will consist of a 12-story residential and commercial building.

Developers and city officials said the project is the first step in an effort to revitalize the East Washington corridor.

“We’re sort of sick of empty car-parking lots, and car dealership lots and we want to see this neighborhood move forward,” said Bridget Maniaci, District 2 alder. “This project is the first catalyst to the future for not just this neighborhood but for the city as a whole.”

The design team and city leaders have worked countless hours to make the project a reality, said Maniaci. They’re working diligently to realize a new vision for the block, she added.
