A 7-year old boy has died following a bizarre crash on Tuesday evening outside an office building on Madison’s West Side.

The Dane County Medical Examiner’s office identified the boy as Aiden Mueller on Wednesday night. He was pronounced dead at University of Wisconsin Hospital.

His mother, 36, was critically injured but remains in stable condition.

Mueller’s father, 38, and his younger sister, 4, suffered injuries that aren’t believed to be life-threatening.

The incident occurred at about 6 p.m. in a neighborhood just south of Mineral Point Road and west of South Whitney Way. A family was having dinner at a picnic table on private property at the First Business Bank when they were struck by a wayward vehicle.

“At some point (the driver) veers from the left lane into the right lane, hops a curb, goes through some bushes, hits a tree, and then lands in and around this picnic table where this family is dining,” said Madison Police Department spokesperson Joel DeSpain,

Police said they do not know what caused the driver to veer off the road. They have not ruled out the possibility she had some sort of medical emergency leading up to the crash.

The driver did not smell of alcohol, but seemed very disoriented after the crash, said DeSpain.

Police are awaiting blood tests to see if she may have had any medication in her system, and if so, how much.

“The Wisconsin State Patrol is going to do an accident reconstruction. They’ll be able to provide some insight,” DeSpain said.
