Charles O. “Charlie” Nawratil
MONONA-Charles “Charlie” O. Nawratil, age 92, of Monona, died peacefully at Meriter Hospital on Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, following a brief illness. He was born on June 22, 1920, in Chicago, the son of Charles and Mary (Marie Michel) Nawratil. On Sept. 11, 1943, he married the love of his life, Bernice Kretchen, and the couple was blessed with two sons prior to moving from Chicago to Monona in 1954. For eleven years, Charlie managed the Richman Brothers clothing store on the Square in downtown Madison. In 1965, he accepted a position as patients’ accounts manager for Madison General Hospital and continued his employment there until he retired. Not content with retirement, he contracted his services back to the new Meriter Hospital and continued working for several more years. Charlie enjoyed boating and fishing and served a term as the Commodore of the Four Lakes Yacht Club. He and his wife enjoyed a group of life time friends with whom they regularly partied and traveled. Charlie was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monona and was active in the Knights of Columbus for a time. He was also a member of the Elks for a brief time. Charlie was a real people person with a fantastic sense of humor and was still making people laugh on the day he passed away.
He is survived by his sons, Richard (Martha) of Monona and Donald (Victoria) of Cambridge; niece, Barb (Les) Gall; nephew, Carl (Ann) Donis; and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 67 years, Bernice on Nov. 26, 2011; and his adopted sister, Eda Donis.
