Charles Alden Gedye

Verona — Charles Alden Gedye passed away at home in Verona, Wisconsin on August 22, 2013. He was born November 11, 1950 in Spring Valley, Illinois to Charles R. and Helen Alden Gedye of Tonica, Illinois.

He married Lorraine (Lorie) Kolupke in Spring Valley, Illinois on October 20, 1973.

Chuck graduated from Tonica High School, Illinois Valley Community College, and Northern Illinois University where he earned his B.S. degree in biology. He also served in the Air Force. He began his career as an electron microscopist at the University of Chicago in 1978. He then worked at the University of Illinois and later at the University of Wisconsin – Madison as a research technician in various fields ranging from cancer research to plant pathology. His interest in computer technology led him in a new direction as a computer consultant eventually working for the State of Wisconsin until his retirement in 2011.

Chuck had many hobbies including photography and horticulture and was a talented and imaginative artist and guitarist. His most recent hobbies included reading, woodcarving, and winemaking. He was a member of the Prairie Home Vintners. He and Lorie also enjoyed cooking, camping, canoeing, hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Ronald L. Gedye. He is survived by his wife, Lorie, of forty years, his sister Barbara (James) Winn of Streator, Illinois, brother-in-law Joseph (Barbara) Kolupke of Alamosa, Colorado, sister-in-law Elizabeth (Alan) Portzen of Dalzell, Illinois, 12 nieces and nephews, 23 great-nieces and great-nephews, 15 great-great nieces and great-great nephews, relatives in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and England, friends around the globe, and beloved cats Cricket and Spryte.

A celebration of Chuck’s life is being planned for May 2014 at The Barn at Harvest Moon Pond, Poynette, Wisconsin. Memorial donations may be made to the Iowa County Humane Society or the Verona Public Library.
