Cause of sauna fire under investigation
MADISON, Wis. — The Madison Fire Department is trying to determine the cause of a fire that heavily damaged a sauna.
Firefighters were called at 12:05 a.m. Monday to a home in the 1900 block of East Dayton Street on a report from a passerby of a back porch fire. When they arrived, they found a shed on fire that was later identified by the owner as a sauna built from reclaimed wood.
Investigators said there were no signs of interior flames. The owner said the ashes he discarded earlier that day would have been too cold to start a fire, and that the sauna hadn’t been used in a number of days.
An electrical extension cord running into the sauna also appeared to be unaffected and was not the source of the fire, according to investigators. No incendiary devices were found, and no footprints were seen in the freshly-fallen snow.
