Catherine “Kay” R. Thomas

Catherine “Kay” R. Thomas, 93, of Belmont, died on Wednesday January 29, 2014 at Manor Care Health Services, Platteville.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 3, 2014 at St. Philomena Catholic Church, Belmont. Rev. Monte Robinson will officiate. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery at a later date. Friends may call from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Sunday February 2, 2014 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville where there will be a parish rosary at 1:45 p.m., friends may also call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the church.

Memorials may be made to the Catherine “Kay” Thomas Memorial Fund.

Kay was born to Sophia and John Nies on July 22, 1920 in Omaha, NE.

She was united in marriage to Phillip (Bud) Thomas on September 24, 1940 and they had five children. Kay was very involved in the community of Belmont. She was the leader of the Belmont Kitchen Band for years and enjoyed being part of a group who would travel to the nursing homes and special events to sing and play their home-made instruments. She was a Gold Star Mother for Lafayette County due to the death of her son, William “Bill” Thomas, in Vietnam in 1969. She was also very involved in her church, St. Philomena’s in Belmont. She was on the cemetery committee and played an active part in completion of the catholic cemetery.

She is survived by four children, Delbert “Sonny” (Pam Sachs) Thomas of Janesville, WI; Kathleen “Kathy” (Mike) Bodendein of Reedsburg, WI; Carolyn (Butch Mapes) Thomas of Sun Prairie, WI; and Tom “T-Bird” Thomas of Belmont; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great grandchildren; she is also survived by two sisters, Rachel Houseman of MN; and Veronica (Alda Mae) Koenig of CA; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Phillip; son, William “Bill” Thomas; three grandchildren, Gerard, Billy, and Mike Thomas; two brothers and six sisters.
