GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Quarterback Kurt Benkert's time with the Green Bay Packers has come to an end. The team announced Friday it had released Benkert from its roster. The Green and Gold signed Benkert in May 2021 as starter…

Painful playoff loss provides extra motivation for Packers

The Green Bay Packers head into this upcoming season motivated by the stunning and sudden finish to their most recent playoff run. The circumstances surrounding their 13-10 NFC divisional playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers made it particularly tough to get over. Green Bay lost despite having the ball and a 10-3 lead with just over six minutes left. Outside linebacker Rashan Gary and center Josh Myers say they've watched video of the game about 20 times. Tight end Marcedes Lewis and cornerback Jaire Alexander say plays that went wrong in that game have provided incentive throughout the offseason.

Detroit Lions sign Devin Funchess to add depth at tight end

The Detroit Lions are giving Devin Funchess a chance to make a comeback in the NFL. Detroit signed him as a tight end on Tuesday to add depth to a position group led by T.J. Hockenson. Funchess has not played in the league since 2019. Carolina drafted him out of Michigan in the second round of the 2015 draft and he had 21 touchdown receptions over four seasons with the Panthers.

Packers WR Lazard signs his restricted free agent tender

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Allen Lazard has signed his restricted free agent tender. Lazard hadn’t signed the tender as of last week, when he was the only Packer not to report for the team’s mandatory minicamp. Lazard will make $3.986 million this year and will be eligible for unrestricted free agency at the end of the upcoming season. The 26-year-old Lazard caught 40 passes for 513 yards and eight touchdowns last season.

Alexander: 'Sky's the limit' for Packers' cornerback trio

Jaire Alexander took pride in the way his fellow Green Bay Packers cornerbacks thrived without him last season. Alexander now is back from a shoulder injury that sidelined him for most of the 2021 regular season and eager to join Eric Stokes and Rasul Douglas as part of a secondary that could rank among the NFL’s best. He’s healthier and wealthier now after signing a four-year, $84 million contract extension with a $30 million signing bonus to make him the NFL’s highest-paid defensive back.

Packers' Watkins savors new start after uncertain offseason

Sammy Watkins was sitting on his couch and wondering whether his football career was over. Injuries had limited his effectiveness. He was coming off a season in which he had caught just 27 passes for 394 yards and one touchdown, career lows in all three categories. Then came a call from the Green Bay Packers that changed Watkins’ entire attitude. Watkins now has a new home on a team lacking proven receivers. He also has a chance to catch passes from two-time reigning MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Watkins can’t wait for the opportunity.

Former Green Bay Packers halfback Switzer dies at 89

Veryl Switzer, the trailblazing former Green Bay Packers halfback who traded a career in the NFL for service as a lieutenant in the Air Force, died Saturday. He was 89. Before his professional career, Switzer starred on the gridiron and in track and field at Kansas State before returning as an administrator. Citing his family, the school announced his death in a statement Sunday. Additional details weren’t provided. Switzer was an All-American for the Wildcats for three straight seasons, leading the team in rushing in 1952 and 1953, and was selected fourth overall by the Packers in the 1954 draft. He played in 24 games in the NFL before his military service, then resumed his football career in Canada.

Packers' Douglas eager to build on his breakthrough season

Green Bay Packers cornerback Rasul Douglas is approaching the offseason with the same attitude that helped the former practice squad player emerge as one of the NFL’s biggest surprises last year. His breakthrough season resulted in a three-year, $21 million contract that keeps him in Green Bay. But Douglas isn’t taking anything for granted. He understands the tenuous nature of NFL life after bouncing around a few organizations last year before finding a home in Green Bay. Douglas is part of a formidable defensive backfield that includes cornerbacks Jaire Alexander and Eric Stokes plus safeties Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage.
