All-American Wines

Wine may not be the first thing on your mind for the fourth of July, but let me use the occasion as a springboard to explore some different angles to this idea of "American Wines."

Tried and True Tacos

Francisco Vasquez knows a thing or two about tacos. A native of Jalisco, Mexico, he spent his childhood working in taco joints, and at thirteen opened his first taqueria on a bicycle. Later he owned a string of restaurants along the U.S.–Mexico border, and after moving to Madison in 1998, Vasquez and his partner, Josefina Trejo, began selling tacos, tamales and menudo out of their home. When the couple opened Taqueria Guadalajara in 2006, they had a built-in following.

Ice Cream vs. Frozen Custard

They can be one and the same, and then again, not.  Most ice cream made in this country is of two types depending upon the ingredients.  One is sometimes referred to as Philadelphia-style, made with cream, milk, sugar and flavorings.  The other as French-style, eggs added to the cream, milk and sugar and the mixture cooked to form a custard.

Summertime Canned Beer and Boxed Wine

Summer is an excellent time for the beer and wine industry in Wisconsin. From backyards and beaches to boats and bleachers, there are not many places you won't see a Wisconsin resident enjoying a drink. The only problem: glass isn't allowed everywhere, nor do you want to lug a heavy 12-pack around. No need to fear, canned beer and boxed wine are here (and better than ever)!

American Pie

I've written about it many times before and I'm sure I will again.  My, oh my, I love pie!  It's been around forever and is as unsophisticated as it gets but I never tire of it.  A recent trip to Kentucky where pie is still the dessert of choice reminded me just how much I do like it.  There like elsewhere in the South, custard pies topped with meringue are favored—fruit like peaches, cherries and blackberries are more often reserved for cobbler, a messy deep-dish affair.
