With ‘Jurassic World 3,’ dinosaurs rule again at box office

“Jurassic World: Dominion” took a mighty bite out of the box office with $143.4 million in North American ticket sales according to studio estimates Sunday. Including earnings from international showings where the film opened in various markets last weekend, “Jurassic World: Dominion” has already grossed $389 million. “Top Gun: Maverick” is still coasting in rarefied skies too: It fell only 44% in its third weekend with an estimated $50 million to take second place, bringing its North American total north of $393.3 million.  This weekend is only the third of the pandemic era in which the total domestic box office surpassed $200 million.

'Shine the light': Ariana DeBose talks hosting Tony Awards

Tony Award host and theater veteran Ariana DeBose says this year’s telecast will spread its arms wider to celebrate both Broadway’s stars and the unsung heroes like understudies and swings who kept shows open during the pandemic restart. The Oscar-winning and Tony-nominated actress was once an ensemble member and understudy on Broadway. DeBose will host the three-hour awards show Sunday, helping hand out the 26 competitive Tonys. She vows to “have a lot of fun.” DeBose is quite familiar with the massive Radio City Music Hall stage. She’s performed during three previous telecasts, including in “Summer,” “Motown the Musical” and “Bring It On: The Musical.”

Shakira and soccer star Gerard Piqué confirm split

Colombian pop star Shakira and her partner, Spanish soccer star Gerard Piqué, are splitting up. Shakira's public relations firm said Saturday in a statement quoting the pair that “we regret to confirm that we are separating. For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect our privacy. Thank you for your understanding." The 45-year-old Shakira met the Barcelona defender while she was promoting her 2010 World Cup anthem “Waka Waka – Time for Africa.” The couple have two children. Rumors of the demise of the couple’s 11-year relationship have gripped Spanish media. Some reports said the 35-year-old Piqué had left the family’s home in Barcelona and was living by himself in the city.

Willem Dafoe to receive honorary UW-Milwaukee doctorate

Actor Willem Dafoe is set to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee next month. University officials announced Friday that Dafoe will receive the doctorate of arts on May 22. He's slated to speak at the school's two graduation ceremonies that day. He'll receive the degree during the second ceremony of the day. Dafoe attended UW-Milwaukee in 1973 and 1974 before leaving to become part of Theatre X, an independent experimental theater company. He appeared on stage at UW-Milwaukee in “Phaedra” and “A Moon for the Misbegotten.” Dafoe has appeared in more than 100 films, including “Platoon" and the Spider-Man franchise. He's currently appearing in “The Northman.”

Will Smith gets 10-year Oscars ban over Chris Rock slap

The motion picture academy has banned Will Smith from attending the Oscars or any other academy event for 10 years following his slap of Chris Rock at the Academy Awards. The move comes after a meeting Friday of the academy’s board of governors to discuss a response to Smith’s actions. The academy in a statement called Smith’s actions “unacceptable and harmful.” Smith pre-emptively resigned from the academy last week during the run-up to the meeting and said he would accept any punishment the academy handed down.
