Two accidents accidents at the same intersection in the town of Decatur were linked, according to the Green County Sheriff’s Office. A car crashed into power lines that fell during an earlier accident involving a drunken driver.

The Sheriff’s Office reported that at 7:42 p.m. Sunday, it responded to a crash at the intersection of County Road F and County Road OK.

Greenfield resident David Cotter, 36, lost control of his vehicle at the intersection and went off the road into the ditch after missing the curve of the road. Cotter’s car hit a power pole, a phone junction box, a tree and multiple traffic signs.

At 7:45 p.m., authorities responded to the same intersection for a second crash.

Stephen Wallace, 67, of Broadhead, hit power lines that were hanging low from the first accident. The power lines started Wallace’s car on fire.

Wallace wasn’t injured from the accident. Authorities were able to help put out the fire. Cotter was taken to the Monroe Hospital emergency room for his injuries.

Cotter was arrested on suspicion of his first OWI and of failing to maintain control of a motor vehicle.
