Camilla “Mickey” Foil Owen
Camilla Foil “Mickey” Owen, age 85, of Janesville, passed away after a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family on Friday, March 3, 2017. She was born on Sept. 27, 1931, in Taylors, SC, the daughter of Robert Edmund Foil and Mary Louise (Slough) Foil Thomas. Mickey graduated from Sullins Academy in Bristol, VA, and went to Mary Baldwin College, and eventually transferred to the University of Alabama graduating in 1952 with a B.A. in Liberal Arts. She met the love of her life A. Paul (Scott) Owen, Jr. at school and they married on Jan. 24, 1953, in Columbia, SC. They enjoyed 64 happy years together. They were blessed with 5 children: Paul, Jeffery, Camilla, Katherine and Courtney.
Mickey was a very active and competitive person all her life. She was an excellent tennis, golf and bridge player. In earlier years, she also enjoyed curling. She was an avid Badger football, basketball, and hockey fan. Mickey especially liked competing in charity sports events with her family and friends. She was a voracious reader and daily crossword puzzle solver. Mickey enjoyed music and was a wonderful dancer. She loved the Cubs and was ecstatic to see them win the World Series.
Mickey was a member of the Janesville Country Club, the Janesville Women’s Club, the Janesville Tennis Association, the Janesville Senior Center, Rotary Gardens and the Ladies Guild for Trinity Episcopal Church. Years ago she volunteered for the Church’s “Nearly New Shop”. But most importantly Mickey was a kind and generous supporter of many local events and charities.
Mickey was never far removed from her southern roots. She valued correct grammar, proper etiquette, and loyal friends. Her self-deprecating sense of humor and quick wit were ever present. She never lost her soft drawl or her genuine charm. Mickey faced her terminal illness with grace and tranquility. She continued to express interest in others and for her husband and children’s well-being in the future. She expressed her love and gratitude freely and tried to soothe her family’s sadness to the end. She continually reminded everyone, “I’ve had a wonderful life.”
Mickey is survived by her husband, A. Paul (Scott) Owen, Jr.; son, A. Paul (Linda) Owen, III of Madison; daughters: Camilla Owen, Katherine (Shaughn) Bolton and Courtney (Keith) Smith all of Janesville; 7 grandchildren: Sam Owen, Lee (Luke) Wainwright, Jake Owen, Maggie Bolton, Olivia Bolton, Rachel Smith and Hailey Smith; very special great-grandchild, Elle Wainwright; sister-in-law, Mary Owen Johnson; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Susan Ryan and Mary K. Derouin. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Jeffery Robert; sisters, Betty Jane (Bob) Edwards and Bobbie Lou (Harold) Hunt; in-laws, A. Paul Owen, Sr. and Margaret “Doty” Owen; and brother-in-law, John (Janet) Owen.
