Caller tries to scam church for deposit on new electric meter, police say
MADISON, Wis. — A caller tried to scam a Madison church out of money by saying the church owed money for a new electric meter, police said.
The scammer told an employee at Door Creek Church on Dominion Drive that technicians were on their way to disconnect electrical service and that power would be turned off in 30-40 minutes if the employee did not call Alliant Energy’s collection department immediately, according to a release.
The employee called the number provided, 800-719-1430, and talked to a second man, who insisted that several notices had been sent to the church, but they had all been ignored, police said. The employee was also told a $750 security deposit was needed after Alliant replaced meters on the church’s property.
The employee figured out the call was a scam because Alliant Energy is not the church’s provider, according to the release.
Alliant Energy officials told the employee they would never ask for a security deposit on a meter.
