Burke bashes vouchers, praises common core
Candidate spoke to Wisconsin state leaders
MADISON, Wis. — Democratic candidate for governor Mary Burke bashes private school vouchers and praises the common core curriculum in a speech to Wisconsin school leaders.
Burke spoke Friday at the annual meeting of the Wisconsin Association of School District Administrators. She used the speech to say that the statewide voucher program is a drain on public schools and bad public policy. The line drew applause from the district administrators and superintendents.
Gov. Scott Walker signed the statewide program into law and has said if re-elected he wants to raise enrollment caps.
Burke says she fully supports the common core curriculum, which she says will be more rigorous than current standards.
Walker has called for replacing the common core standards with something new developed in Wisconsin.
