Bur oak residents tried to save cut down
150-year-old tree was gone by 5 p.m. Thursday
FORT ATKINSON, Wis. — The fight about preserving a 150-year-old tree is over.
Less than a day after a News 3 and Channel3000.com report about the one-and-a-half-centuries old bur oak, the tree has been removed.
A report Wednesday included information about an online petition residents started to save the bur oak just north of the county line between Jefferson and Rock counties.
Spokesman for the DOT Michael Bie said the department didn’t have a date set for removal but that it was expected to be removed within the month.
The tree was gone by 5 p.m. Thursday.
The state Department of Transportation said the oak had to come down for a highway project.VIDEO: Author, ecologist discusses the human connection to trees
