Bullet from gun fired inside Madison apartment strikes parked car, police say
MADISON, Wis. — No one was hurt after a 29-year-old man fired a rifle inside a west Madison apartment Tuesday night, police said.
Madison police said officers responded at 6:11 p.m. to a report of a shot fired in the 4600 block of Atticus Way. Multiple officers set up a perimeter, as many concerned residents had heard the loud gunfire.
Police made their way into the apartment where the gunfire reportedly came from and took 29-year-old Holland S. Riedel into custody without incident, officials said.
Police said the round went through a door and lodged in a car parked outside.
A 31-year-old man told police that he knew Riedel, and that he and a third man were inside Riedel’s apartment when an argument broke out. He told officers Riedel armed himself with the rifle and pointed it at him. At that point, he said he and the third man feared for their safety and ran outside. A short time later they heard the gunshot.
Riedel told police it was an accidental discharge and that he was cleaning the rifle.
He was arrested on tentative charges of second-degree recklessly endangering safety and endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon while under the influence.
