Brookfield man dies after falling through ice of Dodge County lake
2 get out before crews arrive
FOX LAKE, Wis. — One person died and two others were injured after falling through the ice of a Dodge County lake, Dodge County deputies said.
Around 6:10 p.m. the Dodge County 911 center got a call reporting that people had gone through the ice on Fox Lake in northwestern Dodge County, according to a release.
Three men went through the ice while riding ATVs, officials said. Jared Werni, 31, of West Bend, and Douglas Niggemeier, 38, of Mequon, were out of the water when emergency crews arrived, but the third person, Steven Kellerman, 41, of Brookfield, was unconscious and was pulled out of the water by emergency crews in a rescue boat.
Kellerman was in the water for about an hour, officials said. He was transported to a hospital, but was later pronounced dead.
A Fox Lake police officer suffered a minor, non-life-threatening injury during the rescue, according to the release. He was treated and is expected to be released.
Officials said Flight for Life was contacted to assist at the scene, but the crew was unable to fly due to weather conditions.
According to the release, the DNR will conduct an investigation.
