Bridge over University Avenue on UW campus to be demolished

The bridge over University Avenue between the George L. Mosse Humanities Building and Vilas Hall is scheduled to be demolished next week.

The demolition will start Monday and continue throughout the week, according to a news release.

The bridge is being taken down, because it is deteriorating and a decline in use, especially after a traffic signal was installed for pedestrians at East Campus Mall, officials said.

“The cost of replacing the structure is prohibitive given the fact that fewer people now use it,” the release said.

University Avenue between Park and Frances streets will be closed from 8 p.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday, officials said. Traffic will be detoured onto Frances and Dayton streets.

Multiple lane closures are scheduled throughout the week, according to the release. Pedestrians and bicyclists will also experience various detours during the project.
