Brewers announce roster for National League Wild Card game

Despite an injury during the last weekend of the regular season, the Milwaukee Brewers’ roster for their National League Wild Card game against the Washington Nationals includes All-Star outfielder Lorenzo Cain.

Cain’s status for the winner-take-all game was up in the air after an ankle injury Saturday night against the Colorado Rockies. Cain missed the regular season finale on Sunday and said his status was up in the air for the Wild Card game. Rookie Trent Grisham started in center field in Cain’s place on Sunday.

But Cain is on the 25-man roster for Tuesday night’s game, as part of 15 position players and 10 pitchers at manager Craig Counsell’s disposal.

Cain isn’t the only Brewer fighting nagging injuries heading into the Wild Card game. Fellow outfielder Ryan Braun has a strained calf, third baseman Mike Moustakas has played through a sore elbow, and first baseman Eric Thames has missed time with sore hamstrings.

Counsell has not announced his starting lineup yet, but whoever is in the starting nine will face off against Nationals ace Max Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young award winner who struck out 243 batters in 27 starts this year with a 2.92 ERA.

The Brewers will start Brandon Woodruff, making his third appearance since returning from the Injured List from a strained oblique. Woodruff may only pitch a few innings before Counsell decides to turn to his bullpen.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:08 p.m. CDT on TBS. The winner of the game will advance to face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Division Series. The Brewers faced the Dodgers in last year’s National League Championship Series, falling one game short of the World Series.
