Boys & Girls Club of Dane County raises over $300K for Vel Phillips statue

Vel Phillips, a civil rights pioneer and the first black person elected to a Wisconsin statewide office, died at 94.

MADISON, Wis. — The Boys & Girls Club of Dane County has raised more than $300,000 toward efforts to create a statue in honor of Vel Phillips.

Boys & Girls Club of Dane County CEO Michael Johnson shared the update Tuesday after the Greater Milwaukee Foundation Board approved a $30,000 grant. The donation puts the total well above the club’s $275,000 fundraising goal.

Calls to create the statue came after protesters last summer told Johnson there were no people of color represented in the State Capitol.

Phillips was the state’s first Black judge and the first person of color ever elected to statewide office.

If the state does not approve the proposal, BGCDC will set up an endowment in Phillips’ name to help children throughout Wisconsin.
