Board of Education discussing four new names for Madison Memorial High School
MADISON, Wis. – Three people spoke publicly at Thursday’s Madison Board of Education meeting, as conversations about a potential name change to James Madison Memorial High School continued.
Four names are up for consideration: Darlene M. Hancock Memorial, Vel Phillips Memorial, Bruce Dahmen Memorial, or simply Memorial High School.
Two of Thursday’s speakers, who went to Memorial, voiced support for either Vel Philips or Darlene M. Hancock to be the new name. Both were prominent black leaders.
Tyler Dahmen also spoke in support of naming the school after his father.
The district has not said for sure whether they will be changing the name of the school.
