Black Hawk falls short in Div. 5 championship game
Bangor holds on for 39-29 win
ASHWAUBENON — Bangor handed Black Hawk its first loss of the season as the Cardinals defeated the Warriors 39-29 in the WIAA Division Five State Girls Basketball championship game at the Resch Center Saturday.
Black Hawk’s stifling pressure defense forced 28 Bangor turnovers, but the Warriors couldn’t overcome a cold shooting performance.
In the first half, Black Hawk was only 4-26 from the field (15.4%) and in the game, was 3-31 from three-point range (9.7%).
After trailing 20-11 at intermission, the Warriors staged a comeback and when Brianna Hagen hit a three with 5:38 left, it was a tie game, 27-27.
But Bangor’s Elizabeth Nicolai answered with a three pointer and the Cardinals made just enough free throws to hang on to win. Bangor was 13-29 from the free throw line in the game.
Black Hawk ends its season with a 28-1 record.
