Bird tests positive for West Nile virus in Fond du Lac County
A dead bird in Fond du Lac County tested positive for West Nile virus, the first bird in the county to be found with the virus since monitoring began in May, according to the Fond du Lac County Health Department.
Officials said the crow was found dead on July 25.
Area residents should take extra measures to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, Kim Mueller, a registered nurse with the department, said.
To avoid being bitten, the department recommends trimming grass and weeds, using insect repellent and avoiding areas of standing water.
Officials said the virus spreads to humans from infected mosquitoes, which pick up the disease from infected birds.
