Betty Marie Christensen

Betty Marie Christensen

Betty Marie Christensen, 89, has joined her husband Gordon in heaven after living a full and beautiful life on this earth.

She promised him she would join him soon when he passed away last year. Luckily she wasn’t any more specific than that as she enjoyed a full year with her family and friends before keeping her promise. Betty was born on July 22,1924 in Lake Mills, Wisconsin. She was the daughter of Donald Farr and Marie (Draeger) Farr. She grew up in Lake Mills, WI, graduated LMHS in 1942 and was engaged to Gordon Christensen as he left for the Marines and the South Pacific for WW II. He luckily returned and they were married in 1945. They were happily married 67 years until his passing in 2013. She worked in an insurance agency after both of her children were in school until 1984. She and her Gordo retired to Arizona in 1987 and recently returned to Madison. Betty was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and Past President of the Women’s Organization at Nakoma Country Club.

Our Mom will always be remembered as a classy woman and for her infectious sense of humor. She was always involved in activities that she loved; bowling, golfing, playing card games of all kinds and of course entertaining their many friends and family. Anyone who knew her, realized that she always was the one getting some project or event moving and having fun the whole way. We commonly referred to her as the “Energizer Bunny” and that was still true until her last breath. She also had a “Bucket List” and we recently found out there was one more item on it. She was able to attend and have a ball at the 140th Kentucky Derby, last month, with her son, her daughter, her niece and their spouses. This was with oxygen, a wheelchair and at least one Mint Julep.

Her grandchildren and now her 6 great grandchildren were truly the apple of her eye. She thoroughly enjoyed teaching them all the games she loved to play and making their favorite “butterhorns” for them. The love she showered on her family and friends will keep her alive forever. She is in a good place now and will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her son Dennis (Monica) Christensen, her daughter Karen (Bobby) Dietrich, her grandchildren: Jamie (Pete) Sunenshine, Joshua Christensen, Stacey (Dan) Lambert, Emily (Mike) Nitido, and Scott (Malorie) Ninemeier, her great grandchildren: Zoe Sunenshine, Jacob Sunenshine, Christian Lambert, Benjamin Nitido and Ashley Lambert. She was also loved by her step grandchildren: Sue (Ninemeier) Cooper, Mary (Marc) Watts, Lisa (John) Golluber, Eric Fox and her step great-grandchildren: Doug, Zack and Rebecca Cooper, Jessica, Patience and Joshua Watts, Lucas and Cody Golluber, and Kylie Vaughn-Fox.

She is also survived by her sister Darlene Meyers, her brother-in-law Gwynn (Pearl) Christensen, and all of their loving children, Vicki, Tama, Lonnie, Marcie, Jonie, Gary, their spouses, children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Gordon, son Barry, and her brother-in-law Russell Meyers.

Donations in Betty’s memory can be made to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Agrace Hospice or the charity of your choice.

Memorial Service will be held at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1701 McKenna Blvd., Madison, WI 53711 at 11:30 am on Thursday, June 5th, 2014. Family will receive guests from 10:00 am until time of service.
